Brian E. Ellis,Gary W. Kuroki,Helen A. Stafford: Genetic Engineering of Plant Secondary Metabolism

Description
In this volume of Recent Advances in Phytochmistry you will find a record of the pioneering attempts of plant biochemists and molecular biologists to modify the patterns of secondary metabolism in plants, as presented at the 33rd annual meeting of the Phytochemical Society of North America, in Asilomar, California, on June 27 -July I, 1993. The studies described here represent a marriage of the newest of technologies with one of the oldest human activities, exploitation of plant chemistry. They also represent the beginning of a new era of phytochemical research, an era that will undoubtedly begin to provide answers to some of the long-standing questions that have absorbed plant biochemists for the past century. There is, for instance, a common deflating experience to which every worker in the area of plant secondary metabolism can probably relate. After hearing about the latest research findings regarding some aspect of remarkable compound "X", someone in the audience finally directs the inevitable question at the hapless speaker. "Tell me, is anything known as to the biological role of compound "X" in the plant?" The answer, in most cases, must be "essentially nothing"! This is a frustrating scenario for both the speaker and the audience, since the very fact that a complex biosynthetic pathway remains encoded in a plant genome points to an associated selective advantage. The problem is that establishing the nature and scale of that advantage is a very complex task.
As the poet Rainer Maria Rilke suggests, Live the questions now. In "Sacred Fire," Rolheiser s deeply affecting prose urges us on in pursuit of the most holy of all passions a deep and lasting intimacy with God." One magpie, lots of stuff, and a few friendly miceshow us that less ismore. This innovative and spare picture book asks the question: When is MORE more thanenough? Can a team of well-intentioned mice save their friend from hoarding toomuch stuff? With breathtaking illustrations from the award-winning Iopeners Trees and Leaves Single Grade K 2005c free epub Brian Lies, thisbook about conservation wraps an important message in a beautiful package. The First World War killed around eight million men and bled Europe dry. In this provocative book Niall Ferguson asks: was the sacrifice worth it? Was it all really an inevitable cataclysm and were the Germans a genuine threat? Was the war, as is often asserted, greeted with popular enthusiasm? Why did men keep on fighting when conditions were so wretched? Was there in fact a death wish abroad, driving soldiers to their own destruction? The war, he argues, was a disaster - but not for the reasons we think. Far worse than a tragedy, it was the greatest error of modern history. 'The most challenging and provocative analysis of the First World War to date' Ian Kershaw 'Must take a permanent place at the top of the War's historiography. It is one of the very few books whose own scale matches that of the events it describes' Alan Clark, Daily Telegraph 'Possibly the most important book to appear in years both on the origins of the First World War ...Ferguson can confidently claim to have inherited A. J. P. Taylor's mantle' Paul Kennedy, New York Review of Books 'At one massive stroke, Niall Ferguson has transformed the intellectual landscape' Economist
